राम राम मंडळी, आमचे दोन मित्रवर्य अभय नातू आणि केदार सोमण यांची मराठी विकिपिडियाकरता मोलाची कामगिरी आहे. हे दोघेही मराठी विकिकरता खूप काम करत असतात. मराठी विकिशी निगडीत एक याहू समुहही आहे, जिथे मराठी विकिसंदर्भात रस असलेली माणसं एकत्र येऊन चर्चा करू शकतात, आपापले विचार एकमेकात वाटू शकतात. नुकतीच अभय नातू आणि केदर बोडस या दोघांची, शुद्ध मराठी (प्युअर मराठी), व वापरण्याजोगी मराठी (युजेबल मराठी) या संदर्भातील विकिच्या याहू समुहावरीलएक चर्चा आमच्या वाचनात आली. आम्हाला ही चर्चा खूप मोलाची वाटली व दोघांचेही विचार महत्वाचे वाटले. या संदर्भात आपल्या मिपाकरांचेही काय विचार आहेत हे जाणून घेण्यासाठी आम्ही ती चर्चा सर्व मिपाकरांच्या महितीकरता येथे देत आहोत. इच्छुक मिपाकरांनीही यात साधकबाधक चर्चा करावी आणि आपापले विचार मांडावेत ही विनंती.. तात्या. याहू समुहावर एकमेकांशी मराठीतून संवाद साधणे बरेचसे अडचणीचे असल्यामुळे अभय आणि केदार, दोघांचीही मूळ पत्रे विंग्रजी भाषेतच आहेत. केदारचे पत्र - My two cents about Marathi Wikipedia Hello All, I have read some articles and also read some discussions on Marathi wikipedia. There is one important issue I want to discuss. My question is "Do we need to coin new words or terms for commonly used English words?" Like Internet or web browser? If we coin new terms, nobody will every use it for sure. In fact coining such new terms makes use of Marathi language impractical. What we need to do is to allow the most common words in Marathi. Every three months or so, Oxford printing press prints new version of English dictionary and they allow more words in English. Marathi needs to be more open like that. I have dealt with Japanese people and they have allowed all the technical English words in daily use. In fact a Japanese friend of mine was surprised when he used some word as Japanese and I told him that is actually English word. That's why we see people using Japanese and softwares being released Japanese language. But we do not see any version of Marathi softwares, because the attempt to keep Marathi pure makes the it unusable. So we are at crossroads and we have to choose one. Pure Marathi or usable Marathi. And we must go for usable Marathi. If we insist on purity, Marathi will die. Guaranteed. Any comments? Thanks, अभयचे उत्तर - Usable, but not at all costs. Allow me to explain -- It is extremely important that we do not contribute to Marathi being overly complicated (surely you must remember agnirathagamanaagam anasuchakataamra lohapaTTikaa for a railway signal :-}). If the common man finds it unusable, the language will start to die off soon. To keep it usable, a language must be flexible and adaptive. However, the flexibility *must not* come at the price of structural and fundamental changes. I would equally hate to read 'aamhii four-thirty vaajataache plane pakaDuun mid-night na.ntar Mumbailaa reach karato.' It's a fine line we must walk. Keep the language flexible enough to allow new terms in, yet rigid enough that it is not overrun by external influence. IMHO, English has managed it quite well. Although an Englishman from 17th century will probably not understand every word of English in use today, he will definitely get the hang of it in no time. A language must be flexible, not malleable. Therein lies the difference, again IMHO. To address (finally!) the question asked - It's worth trying to come up with equivalent words, some will stick, some will not. We must not try to hold on desperately to those that do not. For example, (I believe) the word 'saa.ngkaamyaa' was invented here for robot. I think it's starting to stick. 'Janitra' is commonly used for 'generator'.
